Derby Lane Pictorial History

1925. Grand stand, clubhouse, and the first lure used at Derby Lane. It was propelled around the outside of the racing ramp by a heavy flatcar.

1925. "Big Six" Christy Mathewson (nicknamed after a famous fire engine, 3rd from left), Hall of Fame New York Giants pitcher presenting this silver cup he donated for a 1/4 mile Jump race March 23, 1925. 1934. Greyhound fans and baseball stars: (front, left to right) pitcher Dizzy Dean (St. Louis Cardinals), Babe Ruth (New York Yankees), and Rabbit Maranville hold numbers that were hand placed the on the odds board. Behind are the three Judges, Sid Harris, Tom and Heuse Gregory and odds board number placer.

1935.  Famous Derby Lane Band, was once seated in the infield next to the judges stand.  They played marches for the parading greyhounds, reminded customers to place their bets before the windows closed with a song called “Hurry” and generally entertained race fans.

1936. Spotlights stretched across the track  from the judges stand illuminated the finish line for the photo finish camera. Its use eliminated human error in judging the winner in close races. New Art Deco judges stand and electronic odds board reflect the prevailing architectural style.

1937. Trophy presentation with baseball stars Lou Gehrig, and Babe Ruth. General Manager and the two judges and racing secretary stand behind.

1943. Due to gas rationing during World War II, cars couldn't drive as far as the track and the bus stopped a mile away. Derby Lane provided horse and mule drawn wagons and an electric American Express Travel Service motorized pull cart to transport patrons from the bus stop.

1948. Golf trophy winner Forest Ablaze greeted by (kneeling) Lou Worsham and Jimmy Demaret, and (standing, left to right) lead out, George Schneiter, PGA tournament champion chairman, E. P. "Bill" Cody, prominent local sportsman and Phil Gafur and trainer.

1986. Record 12,779 fans to watch Keefer who won the first 4 stakes races of the season, the St. Petersburg Inaugural, All-Star Kennel Preview, King & Queen and the &100,000 Distance Classic.
